(can you try the different speeds)
At the end of this content,
I added all the content again
with audio for all of it.
I used the “slow 1” speed
Is that too fast or too slow?)

2 Ps.
What holds us back
from learning

Progress

(can you try the different speeds)

We can make progress
by getting better,
and learning more.

(normal speed)

We can also make progress
by noticing
what is holding us back.

(slow 1)

Our sailboat can go faster
if we use the sails better
or add new sails,
but there’s a limit to that.

(slow 2)

If we don’t notice
there is a rope
and an anchor
holding us back,
our improved sails
won’t help much.

(slow 3)

If we pull in the anchor
or cut the rope,
our boat
will make a lot of progress quickly.

(slow 4)

If we notice
we are carrying heavy things
on our boat that we don’t need,
and we take them off our boat,
our progress will improve
even if we don’t improve our sails.

(fast)

Old learning
can hold back
new learning.

Some of our ideas
and beliefs are holding us back.

Often, we don’t notice our beliefs
that hold us back.

We learn to see the world
through our own lens.

We have habits of thinking
that we don’t notice.

Learning to let go
of some ways
of seeing

and thinking
can help us
make big jumps
in progress.

The 2 Ps

1.
The problem is
Permanent

We try to solve a problem many times.
We fail many times.
We learn to believe:
the problem is permanent
we can’t learn to solve the problem
we learn to feel helpless

2.
The problem is
Personal

We learn to believe we are not good enough.
We learn to believe we are the problem.
The problem is personal – it’s me
I am the problem.

I can’t solve problems
because I am not good enough.
I can’t improve.
I can’t change.
So I stop trying
to solve the problem.
I stop trying
to learn or change.
I give up.
I lose hope.

Learned Helplessness

What makes people give up?
Why do we stop trying to learn?
Why do we stop trying to solve a problem?

We give up
when we think
a problem is Permanent.

We give up
when we think
a problem is Personal.

We learn
to live with this problem forever
because we learn to feel
we are not good enough.

We learn to believe
we can’t make progress
when we think:

1. The problem is permanent
– we tried many times to solve the problem but
– we failed many times

2. The problem is personal – the problem is me
– I can’t fix the problem
– I’m not good enough
– I don’t want to try again
– I don’t want to feel the shame
  of trying to change again
  and failing again

Most of the above process is unconscious.
It is learned over many years.

I give up and stop trying
because deep inside,
I have learned to believe
the problem can’t be solved
by me.

I don’t want to try again
and be disappointed again.

I don’t want to try again
and feel shame again.

I don’t want to try again
and feel I am not good enough again.

Unconsciously I learn
to avoid trying again.

I learn to be helpless.
