THE  MEMOIRS  OF  SHERLOCK  HOLMES
by  Arthur  Conan  Doyle

Silver Blaze

Chapter 1

An Extraordinary Case
(非凡的案件)

I am afraid, Watson,
that I shall have to go,”
said Holmes,
as we sat down together
to our breakfast one morning.

“Go! Where to?”

“To  Dartmoor  (達特穆爾);
to King’s Pyland (國王牧場).”
This is the end of paragraph 1

I  was  not  surprised.
In  fact,  my  only  wonder
was  that  he  had  not
already  been  mixed  up
in  this  extraordinary (非凡的)  case,
which  was  the  one  topic
of  conversation
through  the  length
and  breadth (廣度)
of  England.
This is the end of paragraph 2

For  a  whole  day
my  companion (同伴)
had  rambled (閒逛)
about  the  room
with  his  chin  upon  his  chest

and  his  brows  knitted (皺眉),

charging  and

recharging  his  pipe
 with  the
 strongest

black  tobacco (菸草),

and  absolutely  deaf
to  any
of  my  questions
or  remarks (言辭).

This is the end of paragraph 3

Fresh  editions (版本)
of  every  newspaper
had  been  sent  up
by  our  news  agent (報刊經銷商),
only  to  be
glanced  over (草草瀏覽)
and  tossed (隨手丟)  down
into  a  corner.
This is the end of paragraph 4

Yet,  silent  as  he  was,
I  knew  perfectly  well
what  it  was
over  which
he  was  brooding (沈思).
This is the end of paragraph 5

There  was  but
one  problem
before  the  public
which  could  challenge
his  powers  of  analysis (分析),
and  that  was
the  singular (奇特的)  disappearance (失蹤)
of  the  favorite (熱門馬匹)
for  the  Wessex  Cup (威塞克斯盃),
and  the  tragic (悲慘的)  murder (謀殺)
of  its  trainer (教練).
This is the end of paragraph 6

When,  therefore,
he  suddenly  announced
his  intention (意圖)
of setting out (動身)
for the scene (現場)
of the drama (戲劇性事件)
it was only
what I had
both expected (預料)
and hoped for.
This is the end of paragraph 7

“I should be most happy
to go down with you
if I should not be
in the way,”
said I.
This is the end of paragraph 8

“My dear Watson,
you would confer (給予)
a great favor (恩惠)
upon me
by coming.
This is the end of paragraph 9

And I think
that your time
will not be misspent (浪費),
for there are points
about the case
which promise
to make it
an absolutely
unique (獨一無二的) one.
This is the end of paragraph 10

We have,
I think,
just time
to catch our train
at Paddington (帕丁頓車站),
and I will go further
into the matter
upon our journey.
This is the end of paragraph 11

You would oblige (幫忙) me
by bringing with you
your very excellent
field-glass (望遠鏡).”
This is the end of paragraph 12
