The Terrible Tractors
可怕的拖拉機 / 推土機
As the sun rose（太陽升起）
the next morning（隔天早上）,
Boggis and Bunce and Bean
were still digging（還在挖）.

They had dug（已經挖了）
a hole
so deep（非常深）
you could have put
a house into it
（深到可以把一棟房子放進去）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
But they
had not yet（還沒有）
come to
the end of（到達……的盡頭）
the foxes’ tunnel（
狐狸們的地道 / 隧道）.

They were all
very tired
and cross
（生氣的；脾氣不好的）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Dang and blast!（可惡！）”
said Boggis.

“Whose
rotten idea（誰的爛主意）
was this ?”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Bean’s idea,”
said Bunce.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Boggis and Bunce
both stared
at（兩個人都盯著看） Bean.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Bean took
another swig
of cider（又喝了一大口蘋果酒）,
then put
the flask（小酒瓶；扁酒壺）
back into his pocket
without
offering it（沒有拿給……）
to the others（其他人）.

“Listen（聽著）,”
he said angrily（生氣地）,
“I want that fox!”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“I’m going to
get that fox!”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“I’m not
giving in（我不會放棄 / 我不會認輸）
till（直到）
I’ve strung him up（把他吊起來）
over my
front porch（在我家前廊上方）,
dead as
a dumpling（完全死了；Dahl 的滑稽說法）!”

“We can’t get him
by digging（靠挖洞）,
that’s
for sure（那是肯定的）,”
said the fat Boggis.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“I’ve had enough
of（我已經受夠了）
digging.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Bunce,
the little
pot-bellied
dwarf（矮小又大肚子的男人）,
looked up at Bean
and said,
“Have you got
any more
stupid ideas（你還有什麼笨主意嗎）,
then?”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“What?” said Bean.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“I can’t hear you.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Bean never took
a bath（洗澡）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
He never even
washed（清洗身體）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
As a result（結果）,
his earholes（耳孔）
were clogged
with（被……堵住）
all kinds of muck
（各種髒東西；污垢）
and wax（耳垢）
and bits of
chewing-gum（一小塊一小塊的口香糖）
and dead flies（死蒼蠅）
and stuff
like that（之類的東西）.

This made him
deaf（這讓他聽不見 / 變聾）.

“Speak louder（大聲一點說）,”
he said to Bunce,
and Bunce
shouted back（大聲回喊）,
“Got any more
stupid ideas
（還有什麼笨主意嗎）?”

Bean rubbed
the back
of his neck（揉他的後頸）
with a dirty finger
（一根髒手指）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
He had
a boil（他長了一個瘡 / 膿包）
coming there（正在那裡長出來）
and it itched（很癢）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“What we need
on this job（這件事我們需要的）,”
he said,
“is machines（機器）
. . . mechanical shovels
（機械鏟；挖土機鏟斗）.”

“We’ll have him out
（我們會把他弄出來）
in five minutes
with mechanical shovels
（用機械鏟）.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This was
a pretty good idea（很不錯的主意）
and the other two
had to admit it（不得不承認）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“All right then（好吧，那就這樣）,”
Bean said,
taking charge（開始指揮；掌控局面）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Boggis,
you stay here
and see the fox
doesn’t escape（確保狐狸不要逃跑）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Bunce and I
will go and fetch（去拿；去取）
our machinery（我們的機械設備）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
If he tries
to get out（如果他試著出來）,
shoot him quick（趕快開槍打他）.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The long, thin Bean
walked away（走開）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The tiny Bunce
trotted after him（小跑跟著他）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The fat Boggis
stayed where he was（留在原地）
with his gun pointing at（他的槍瞄準著）
the fox-hole（狐狸洞）.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Soon（很快）,
two enormous（巨大的）
caterpillar tractors（履帶式拖拉機 / 推土機）
with mechanical shovels（帶著機械鏟）
on their front ends（在前端）
came clanking（鏗鏘作響地開來）
into the wood（進入樹林）.

Bean was driving one（Bean 開著其中一台）.
