2. Fox. Chapter 6. Part 2
Chapter 6 — Part 2
A sort of madness(一股瘋狂) had taken hold of(控制了;支配了) the three men.
The tall skinny(高高瘦瘦的) Bean
and dwarfish pot-bellied(矮小、大腹便便的) Bunce
were driving their machines like maniacs(瘋子),
racing the motors(猛踩油門)
and making the shovels
dig at a terrific speed(極快的速度).
The fat Boggis
was hopping about(跳來跳去)
like a dervish(像陀螺一樣不停旋轉的人)
and shouting,
‘Faster! Faster!’
By five o’clock in the afternoon(到了下午五點)
this is what had happened to the hill:
The hole
the machines had dug
was like the crater of a volcano(火山口般的大坑).
It was such an extraordinary sight(驚人的景象)
that crowds of people(一大群人)
came rushing out from the surrounding villages(周圍的村莊)
to have a look(來看一看).
They stood
on the edge of the crater(大坑的邊緣)
and stared(凝視)
down at Boggis
and Bunce
and Bean.
‘Hey there,
Boggis!
What’s going on?(發生什麼事了?)’
‘We’re after a fox(正在追捕一隻狐狸)!’
‘You must be mad!’
The people
jeered and laughed(譏笑、大笑).
But this
only made the three farmers
more furious(憤怒)
and more obstinate(固執)
and more determined(下定決心)
than ever(比以往任何時候都更),
not to give up(放棄)
until they had caught the fox.
The End
