Long  life

A  man  was  selling（販賣） 
medicines（藥）
at  a  fair（在市集裡）.

At  first（起初）
he  sold  bottles
of  a  cure 
for  colds（治感冒的藥）
for  just 
a  dollar  a  bottle.

Many  people 
wanted  to  buy  it
and  the  man’s 
young  assistant（助手）
moved  quickly 
through  the  crowd（穿過人群）,
collecting  money（收錢）
and  handing  out 
bottles  of 
the  cold  cure.  （分發瓶裝的藥）

Then,
when  he  had 
a  big  crowd,
the  man  held  up（舉起）
a  very  small  bottle.

“And  now, 
ladies  and 
gentlemen（各位女士、先生）,”
he  shouted,
“here  is  the  medicine
you  have  been 
waiting  for（你們一直在等的藥）.

The  cure 
for  old  age（治療衰老的藥）.

Drink  just 
one  bottle  of  this
and  you 
will  live  forever（永遠活著）.”

“And, 
ladies  and 
gentlemen（各位女士、先生）,”
the  man  continued（繼續說）,

“I’m  not  going 
to  charge  you（向你收費）
a  hundred  dollars 
a  bottle
for  this 
wonderful  medicine（神奇的藥）.

I’m  not  going 
to  charge  you（向你收費）
fifty  dollars  a  bottle.

I’m  not  going 
to  charge  you（向你收費）
twenty-five  dollars 
a  bottle.

No,  ladies  and 
gentlemen（各位女士、先生）,
I’m  going 
to  charge  you（向你收費）
just  ten  dollars 
a  bottle.

Think,  my  friends,
for  ten  dollars
you  can 
live  forever（永遠活著）.”

Most  of 
the  people（大多數人）
in  the  crowd
did  not 
believe  this（不相信這件事）.

One  person  shouted,
“If  it  will  make  you 
live  forever（讓你永遠活著）,
why  don’t  you  drink  it?”

Then  another  person  cried,

“Yes,
you  look  as  if（看起來好像）
you’re  at  least（至少） 
sixty  years  old.”

“Thank  you,  sir, 
thank  you,”
the  man  replied（回答）,

“I’m  so  glad
you  said  that.

My  real  age（我的實際年齡）
is  three  hundred  twenty-nine.”

The  crowd  laughed 
at  this（人群聽了都笑了）
but  there  were  still
a  few  people（仍然有少數幾個人）
who  wanted 
to  believe 
the  man（想要相信這個男人）.

One  of  them  spoke
to  the  man’s  assistant（助手）
as  she  passed  by（經過）.

“Is  that  true,”
he  asked,

“that  he’s  three  hundred  twenty-nine?”

“Don’t  ask  me,”
the  assistant（助手）  said,

“I’ve  only  worked 
for  him（為他工作）
for  a  hundred 
and  fifty  years.”
