1. Story
Comprehension:
a. Read:
The Movement of the Planets
Annie Armstrong
visited Mike’s school again
to answer more questions.
Mike:
Annie, please tell us
how a day is measured.
Annie:
The earth rotates all the time.
Each rotation is 24 hours
or one day long.
That is how we measure a day.
Mike:
Can you please
demonstrate that ?
Annie:
Sure.
You and Tony
can show everybody
how the earth rotates.
Mike, please stand in front of Tony.
Imagine that you are the earth
and that Tony is the sun.
Use your body to turn right around
in one place.
[Mike made five very fast turns.
He looked like a spinning top!]
Mike:
This is fun! Oh no,
I think I am going to fall down!
Annie:
You have to sit down.
You made five rotations
and you rotated too fast.
The earth rotates slowly
and it completes only
one rotation every 24 hours.
Tony:
I wonder how
a year is measured.
Annie:
Let’s draw a big circle
on the ground.
I will put this chair
in the middle of the circle.
Tony, please walk on the circle
around the chair.
Tony:
I’m walking in a circle now.
Annie:
Let’s imagine
that you are a planet
and that the chair is the sun.
You are following an orbit
around the chair now
in the same way
that a planet orbits the sun.
It takes the earth 365 days
or a year to complete one orbit
or to revolve around the sun once.
That is how we measure a year.
Mike:
Wow! That is so interesting!
