Boggis’s Chicken House
Number One
‘This time
we must go
in a very special
direction(朝一個很特別的方向),’
said Mr Fox,
pointing sideways
and downward(指向旁邊和下方).
So he
and his four children
started to dig
once again(再一次).
The work
went much more slowly
now.
Yet(但是)
they kept at it(堅持挖下去)
with great
courage(非常勇敢地),
and little
by little(一點一點地)
the tunnel
began to
grow(隧道開始越挖越長).
‘Dad,
I wish
you would tell us
where we
are going(我真希望你能告訴我們要去哪裡),’
said one
of the children.
‘I dare not
do that(我不敢那樣做),’
said Mr Fox,
‘because this place
I am hoping
to get to(希望能到達)
is so
marvellous(如此奇妙)
that if
I described it
to you now
you would
go crazy with
excitement(興奮得發狂).
And then,
if we failed
to get there
(which is very possible)
(如果我們沒能到達那裡——這很有可能發生),
you would
die of
disappointment(失望死了).
I don’t want
to raise
your hopes
too much(讓你們抱太大的希望),
my darlings(我親愛的孩子們).’
For a long
long time
they kept
on digging.
For how long
they did not
know(他們不知道挖了多久),
because there were
no days
and no nights
down there
in the
murky tunnel(昏暗的隧道).
But at last(終於)
Mr Fox
gave the order
to stop(下令停下來).
‘I think,’
he said,
‘we had better
take a peep
upstairs(到上面偷看一下)
now
and see
where we are.
I know
where I want
to be,
but I can’t
possibly be sure
we’re anywhere
near it
(我根本無法確定我們是否已經接近那裡).’
