Fox
Chapter 10
Part 2
Slowly, wearily(緩慢而疲憊地),
the foxes began
to slope the tunnel
up towards the surface
(把隧道斜著往地面挖).
Up and up
it went(隧道一路向上延伸) . . .
until suddenly
they came to
something hard
above their heads
and they couldn’t go up
any further(再也無法往上挖).
Mr Fox
reached up
to examine(伸爪向上查看)
this hard thing.
‘It’s wood!’
he whispered.
‘Wooden planks(木板)!’
________________________________
‘What does that mean,
Dad ?’
‘It means,
unless I am
very much mistaken
(如果我沒有猜錯的話),
that we are
right underneath
somebody’s house
(就在某個人的房子正下方),’
whispered Mr Fox.
‘Be very quiet now
while I
take a peek(偷偷看一眼).’
________________________________
Carefully,
Mr Fox began
pushing up
one of the floorboards
(地板上的木板).
The board
creaked most terribly
(發出非常嚇人的嘎吱聲)
and they all
ducked down(趕緊趴低身子),
waiting for
something awful
to happen
(等著可怕的事情發生).
Nothing did
(什麼事也沒發生).
________________________________
So Mr Fox
pushed up
a second board.
And then,
very very cautiously
(非常非常小心地),
he poked his head up
through the gap
(把頭從縫隙中探了上去).
He let out
a shriek of excitement
(興奮地尖叫了一聲).
________________________________
‘I’ve done it!’
he yelled.
‘I’ve done it
first time
(我第一次就成功了)!
I’ve done it!
I’ve done it!’
He pulled himself up
through the gap
in the floor
(從地板的縫隙中爬了上去)
and started
prancing and dancing
with joy
(高興得又蹦又跳).
‘Come on up!’
he sang out
(歡快地喊道).
‘Come up
and see
where you are,
my darlings
(我親愛的孩子們)!
What a sight
for a hungry fox !
(對飢餓的狐狸來說,真是太棒的景象了)
Hallelujah
(哈利路亞,表示非常高興) !
Hooray!
Hooray!’
________________________________
The four Small Foxes
scrambled up
out of the tunnel
(急忙從隧道裡爬了上來)
and what a fantastic sight
it was
that now met
their eyes !
(眼前出現的景象真是太奇妙了)
They were
in a huge shed
(一間巨大的棚舍)
and the whole place
was teeming
with chickens
(擠滿了雞).
There were
white chickens
and brown chickens
and black chickens
by the thousand
(數以千計)!
‘Boggis’s Chicken House
Number One!’
cried Mr Fox.
The End
