‘It’s  exactly
what  I  was  aiming  at
(正是我原本想挖到的地方) !

I  hit  it
slap  in  the  middle
(正好挖到正中央) !

First  time (第一次就成功了)!
Isn’t  that  fantastic!

And,
if  I  may  say  so (如果我可以這麼說的話),
rather  clever (相當聰明)!’

 

The  Small  Foxes
went  wild
with  excitement  
(興奮得不得了) .

 

They  started
running  around
in  all  directions (四面八方),
chasing (追趕)
the  stupid (笨頭笨腦的) 
chickens.

 

‘Wait!’
ordered  Mr  Fox.
‘Don’t  lose  your  heads
(別興奮過頭了)!

 

Stand  back (退後)!
Calm  down (冷靜下來)!
Let’s  do  this
properly
(好好地把這件事做好)!

 

First  of  all (首先),
everyone
have  a  drink
of  water!’

 

 

They  all
ran  over  to
the  chickens’ 
drinking-trough (雞的飲水槽)
and  lapped  up (用舌頭舔著喝)
the  lovely  cool  water.

 
 
Then  Mr  Fox
chose  three  of 
the  plumpest  hens (挑了三隻最肥的母雞),
and  with  a  clever  flick
of  his  jaws (靈巧地用嘴迅速一咬)
he  killed  them
instantly (立刻).

 

‘Back  to  the  tunnel!’
he  ordered.

‘Come  on!
No  fooling  around
(不准胡鬧)!

 

The  quicker
you  move,
the  quicker
you  shall  have
something  to  eat
(你們動作越快，就能越快吃到東西)!’

 

One  after  another (一個接一個地),
they  climbed  down
through  the  hole (從洞口爬了下去)
in  the  floor
and  soon
they  were  all  standing
once  again
in  the  dark  tunnel.

 

Mr  Fox
reached  up
and  pulled
the  floorboards
back  into  place
(把那些地板木板拉回原位).

He  did  this
with  great  care
(非常小心地).

 
He  did  it
so  that
no  one 
could  tell (沒有人看得出來)
they  had  ever 
been  moved
(它們曾經被移動過).

 

‘My  son,’
he  said,
giving  the  three  plump  hens
to  the  biggest
of  his  four 
small  children
(四個小狐狸中最大的一個),

‘run  back
with  these
to  your  mother
(帶著這些跑回你媽媽那裡).

 

Tell  her
to  prepare 
a  feast (準備一頓大餐).

 

Tell  her
the  rest  of  us
will  be  along
in  a  jiffy
(我們其他人馬上就會跟著回去),

as  soon  as (等……一完成就)
we  have  made
a  few  other
little  arrangements
(我們再處理好另外幾件小事).’
