Fox
Chapter 11
Story
A Surprise for Mrs Fox
The Small Fox
ran back
along the tunnel
as fast
as he could (用他最快的速度),
carrying the three
plump (肥肥胖胖的) hens.
He was
exploding
with joy (高興得快要爆炸了).
‘Just wait!’
he kept thinking,
‘just wait till (等到……就知道了)
Mummy sees these!’
He had
a long way
to run
but he
never stopped once
on the way
and he
came bursting in (猛地衝進來)
upon Mrs Fox
(來到狐狸太太身邊).
‘Mummy!’
he cried (喊道),
out of breath (氣喘吁吁).
‘Look, Mummy, look!
Wake up
and see
what I’ve
brought you!’
Mrs Fox,
who was
weaker than
ever (比之前更加虛弱)
now
from lack of food (缺乏食物),
opened one eye
and looked
at the hens.
‘I’m dreaming,’
she murmured (低聲說)
and closed
the eye again.
‘You’re not dreaming, Mummy!
They’re real chickens!
We’re saved (我們有救了)!
We’re not
going to starve (餓死)!’
Mrs Fox
opened both eyes
and sat up (坐起身來)
quickly.
‘But, my dear child!’
she cried (喊道).
‘Where on earth
(到底是從哪裡) . . .?’
‘Boggis’s Chicken House
Number One!’
spluttered (激動得結結巴巴地說)
the Small Fox.
‘We tunnelled (挖地道)
right up (一直挖到)
under the floor (地板正下方)
and you’ve
never seen
so many
big fat hens
in all your life (你這輩子)!
And Dad said
to prepare (準備)
a feast (一頓豐盛的大餐)!
They’ll be back soon!’
The sight of food (看到食物)
seemed to (似乎)
give new strength (力氣;體力)
to Mrs Fox.
‘A feast (豐盛的大餐)
it shall be (那就來一頓吧)!’
she said,
standing up.
‘Oh, what
a fantastic fox
your father is!
Hurry up, child,
and start plucking (拔雞毛)
those chickens!’
Far away
down in the tunnel,
the fantastic Mr Fox
was saying,
‘Now for (現在來進行)
the next bit (下一步),
my darlings (我的寶貝們)!
This one’ll be
as easy as pie (非常容易)!
All (全部)
we have to do (我們要做的)
is (就是)
dig another
little tunnel
from here
to there!’
‘To where, Dad?’
‘Don’t ask
so many questions.
Start digging!’
The End
