4 Part 2
The sight (景象)
of this awful thing
seemed to have
an electric effect (像觸電一樣的反應/突然激起強烈反應)
upon Mr Fox.
He jumped up (跳起來)
and shouted (大喊),
‘I’ve got it (我想到辦法了)!
Come on (快點/來吧)!
There’s not a moment to lose
Why didn’t I think of it before (我之前怎麼沒想到呢)!’
‘Think of what (想到什麼),
Dad?’
‘A fox can dig (挖)
quicker (更快)
than a man!’
shouted Mr Fox,
beginning to dig (開始挖).
‘Nobody in the world (世界上沒有人)
can dig
as quick as a fox
The soil (泥土)
began to fly out (開始飛出來)
behind Mr Fox
as he started
to dig for dear life (為了活命拼命地挖)
with his front feet (前腳).
Mrs Fox
ran forward (跑上前)
to help him.
So did the four children
‘Go downwards (向下)!’
Mr Fox.
‘We’ve got to go deep
As deep as we possibly can (盡可能地深)!’
The tunnel (地洞)
began to grow (開始變得)
longer and longer (越來越長).
It sloped steeply downward
Deeper and deeper (越來越深)
below the surface of the ground
it went.
The mother
and the father
and all four of the children
were digging together (一起挖).
Their front legs (前腳/前腿)
were moving (移動)
so fast (非常快)
you couldn’t see them (你幾乎看不見它們).
And gradually (漸漸地)
the scrunching (嘎吱嘎吱的聲音)
and scraping (刮呀刮的聲音)
of the shovels (鏟子)
became fainter and fainter
After about an hour
Mr Fox
stopped digging (停止挖).
‘Hold it (停一下)!’
he said.
They all stopped.
They turned
and looked back (回頭看)
up the long tunnel
they had just dug
All was quiet (一切都安靜了).
‘Phew (呼)!’
said Mr Fox.
‘I think
we’ve done it (我們成功了)!
They’ll never get
as deep as this (到這麼深的地方).
Well done (做得好),
everyone!’
They all sat down,
panting for breath (喘著氣/氣喘吁吁).
And Mrs Fox
said to her children,
‘I should like you to know (我想讓你們知道)
that if it wasn’t for your father
we should all be dead by now (我們現在應該都已經死了).
Your father
is a fantastic fox
Mr Fox
looked at his wife
and she smiled (她微笑了).
He loved her
more than ever (比以前更愛她)
when she said
things like that (那樣的話).
