Fox
Chapter 8
Part 2
‘Go on, then(那你說啊;那就說吧),
tell us the answer,’
said Boggis.
Bean
picked something small and black
out of his ear(從耳朵裡摳出一個黑色的小東西)
and flicked it away(把它彈掉).
‘How many men
have you got
working on your farm?’
he asked.
‘Thirty-five,’
Boggis said.
‘I’ve got thirty-six,’
Bunce said.
‘And I’ve got thirty-seven,’
Bean said.
‘That makes
one hundred and eight men
altogether(總共).
We must order them to(命令他們)
surround the hill(包圍整座山).
Each man
will have a gun
and a flashlight.
There will be no escape(這樣就逃不掉了)
then
for Mr Fox.’
So the order went down to the farms(命令傳到了各個農場),
and that night
one hundred and eight men
formed a tight ring(圍成緊密的一圈)
around the bottom of the hill(在山腳四周).
They were armed with(帶著武器;配備著)
sticks(棍棒)
and guns
and hatchets(小斧頭)
and pistols(手槍)
and all sorts of(各式各樣的)
other horrible weapons(武器).
This made it
quite impossible(完全不可能)
for a fox
or indeed(甚至)
for any other animal
to escape from the hill(從山上逃出去).
The next day,
the watching and waiting(監視和等待)
went on.
Boggis and Bunce and Bean
sat upon small stools(小凳子),
staring at(盯著看)
the fox’s hole.
They didn’t talk much.
They just sat there
with their guns
on their laps(把槍放在腿上).
Every so often(每隔一會兒;時不時),
Mr Fox
would creep a little closer(悄悄靠近一些)
towards the mouth of the tunnel(地道口)
and take a sniff(聞一聞).
Then
he would creep back again(又悄悄退回去)
and say,
‘They’re still there.’
‘Are you quite sure(非常確定)?’
Mrs Fox would ask.
‘Positive(絕對確定),’
said Mr Fox.
‘I can smell
that man Bean
a mile away(一英里外;很遠的地方).
He stinks(他臭死了).’
The End
