Florence  Nightingale

1820 – 1910

Florence Nightingale
was born
in Italy.

Though
her wealthy parents
did not want
their daughter
to work,
Florence wanted
to help
people.

She trained
as a nurse
in Germany.

During a war
in 1854,
Florence was asked
to manage
the nursing
of soldiers
in a hospital
in Turkey.

When she arrived there,
the hospital conditions
were very bad.

The hospital
was very dirty
and many of
the wounded soldiers
died.

Florence and her nurses
improved the sanitation
by
cleaning
the hospital
thoroughly
and
having toilets built.

They also took care of
the wounded soldiers
by washing and
feeding them.

Florence
became known as
“The Lady with the Lamp”
because she
checked to see
if the patients
were comfortable
at night.

After the war,
Florence
used her good reputation
to improve the medical care
in hospitals
in England.

Thanks to Florence Nightingale,
nursing is
a respected profession
today.
